Installing the EMS-HW30C

Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C Unboxed
The Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C electrical management system provides protection from faulty electrical sources. Low and high voltage conditions and surges can damage trailer appliances and electronic equipment. Some electrical faults can pose a real danger of electrical shock. Going to the trouble and expensive of installing this unit is good insurance given all of the different electrical service hook ups we will encounter in our travels.

Keep reading for more on what this EMS does and its installation.

Here is a video by Progressive Industries that describes what an EMS is and why having one is a good idea.

Space was limited but the EMS was installed in the exterior compartment that is located under the refrigerator that gives access to the slide out crank, transfer switch and, once a partition is removed, the main electrical panel under the refrigerator.

The EMS was mounted on a 1/4" melamine board with a clearance hole for the slide crank mechanism and another piece was used to replace the original partition so that things stored in the compartment won't end up in the main electrical panel wiring.

Tee nuts and 8-32 bolts were used to mount the EMS so that it can be easily removed and reinstalled as needed in the future.

Once the mounting location was determined it was a matter of cutting the shore power chord at the right spot, stripping the cable and wires, and making the input and output connections to the EMS.

The mounting board was then fastened onto the side of the compartment.  The remote unit displays the source voltage, the load in amps, frequency in hertz, and indication of any faults or errors in the source current.
